Trademarked Redskins

Washington Redskins trademark canceled by U.S. Patent Office:

The United States Patent and Trademark Office canceled the trademark registration of the Redskins, calling the nickname “disparaging to Native Americans.” Federal trademark law prohibits names or logos that “may disparage persons or bring them into contempt or disrepute.”

Here’s my #hotake: People in the Washington organization are ecstatic about this. I wouldn’t be surprised if they intentionally screwed things up to make it easier. Dan Snyder and the other guys at the very top are idiots and might fight this for real,  but the smart move would be to use the time cost of the appeals process to roll out a new mascot, which in an organization as large and profitable as the NFL must take months.
